If you want to track how the users who click a CTA in one of your Mailchimp email campaigns interact with your site - Mouseflow is here to help.

Setting up UTM variables in Mailchimp is easy, albeit somewhat counterintuitive: Because Google owns UTM, the setup requires that you enable ‘Google Analytics link tracking’.

1. Start by logging in to your Mailchimp account and click on Campaigns in the top menu

2. When you have the Campaigns list up, click on the campaign you want to track (in our case it's the "Mailchimp Plugin Test" campaign we want to track)

3. Once you've opened up the specific campaign you want to track you can scroll to the bottom of the page where it says "Settings and Tracking". Here you can click on the "edit" button to get the screen you see in the screenshot below - and here you can activate the "Google Analytics link tracking" module.

4. When you’ve enabled Google Analytics link tracking all the links and buttons in your email will automatically be given a UTM variable that Mouseflow will pick up automatically. This means that when a customer clicks a CTA button in your email that leads to your site Mouseflow will not just record their visit but will also tag the recording with the information that the visit originated from that specific email.

You can use the tag to filter your:

  • Recordings - to watch the behavior of the users that clicked the email CTA

  • Heatmaps - to gather insights from the collective user experience of the email-visitors

  • Funnels - to see if the emails convert any visitors into customers
