Unfortunately, It’s not possible to select 'Device Type' in the heatmap itself at this time. Device type lets you toggle between seeing the heatmap for either desktop, tablet or mobile devices.
In our regular heatmaps this will:
1. Change the view to look like the selected device
2. Filter the heatmap to include only data from recordings of customers using the selected device.
Regrettably, this is a feature we didn't manage to include in the Live Heatmaps in time for the launch of version 1, but we plan on rolling it out in the next version.
Luckily there is a workaround that will allow you to set the device type for Live Heatmaps.
Step #1: You can use the filters on the heatmap list to filter for 'Device' (in the example below we're filtering for 'Device = Mobile').
Step #2: When you enter the heatmap you can open up Developer Tools (dev-tools) in the browser (in this article we are using Chrome as an example, but if you are using another browser please see this guide on using Developer Tools in your browser).
In Chrome you can open dev-tools either by right-clicking on any element on the page clicking 'Inspect' in the menu (see image below) - or by pressing the 'F12' key on your keyboard (Command + Option + 'i' on a mac).
Once you’ve opened up dev-tools, you can choose to view the page in mobile, tablet or desktop mode by clicking the button in the top left-hand corner of the dev-tools console (please see image below) or by typing Ctrl + Shift + 'm' on your keyboard (Command + Shift + 'm' on a mac).
Once you have chosen the view you want, you can view and navigate your site just as if you were on the actual device you've chosen.
In this example, we chose to filter for data from Mobile Devices (in step #1) so we will choose a mobile view in the controls at the top of the page. In the image below you can see that we're viewing a heatmap of mouseflow.com/tour displayed as it looks in a Pixel 2 XL - and showing data from our mobile visitors (please note that the heatmap will show data for all mobile devices and not just visitors using Pixel 2 XL).
